Paro

Paro is Bhutan’s spiritual and architectural jewel—a valley so sacred that its very soil is consecrated by centuries of Buddhist masters. Home to the kingdom’s only international airport and its most iconic landmark, Paro serves as both gateway and destination, where every turn reveals ancient temples, traditional farmhouses, and the permanent backdrop of snow-capped Mount Jomolhari (7,326m).

The valley’s crowning glory is Taktsang Monastery—the Tiger’s Nest—a 17th-century complex clinging impossibly to a cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor. This is Bhutan’s holiest site, where Guru Rinpoche meditated in a cave after arriving on a tigress in 747 CE. The two-hour pilgrimage hike is mandatory, winding through pine forests where prayer flags flutter across chasms. Below, Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong) commands the valley entrance. Built in 1645, its massive whitewashed walls and golden roofs appear to grow directly from the cliff, connected to the town by a traditional wooden cantilevered bridge.

Ta Dzong, the ancient watchtower, houses the National Museum with its rare thangka collection, while Kyichu Lhakhang—one of 108 temples built in the 7th century—features a miraculous orange tree that bears fruit year-round. The Drukgyel Dzong ruins, destroyed by fire in 1951, commemorate Shabdrung’s victory over Tibetan invaders and offer postcard views of Jomolhari.

Paro hosts the grand Paro Tsechu (spring festival), where masked dances culminate in the dawn unfurling of a giant thangka. Beyond culture, the valley offers biking trails through rice terraces, birdwatching for Himalayan specialties, and farmhouse stays with traditional hot stone baths.

Visit March-May for rhododendron blooms or September-November for clear skies and festivals.
