The World's Most Thrilling Descent

Landing in Bhutan isn’t just transportation—it’s a white-knuckle spectacle. As your plane weaves between peaks topping 7,000 meters, you’ll understand why only 24 pilots in the world are certified to fly this approach. Whether you’re tracing the Himalayas from Kathmandu or crossing the Indian plains from Kolkata, the final descent into Paro Valley is pure theater. Grab a window seat. This is the part you’ll tell everyone about.

Your Only Gateway: Paro International Airport

Bhutan has one international airport—Paro (PBH)—and that’s it. Nestled in a valley at 2,200 meters, Paro operates under strict rules:
  • Daylight only: No flights before sunrise or after sunset
  • Visual approach: No autopilot here; pilots land by sight
  • Weather dependent: Mountain weather changes fast, and delays are normal, not exceptions
Plan accordingly: Schedule at least 4 hours between your Bhutan flight and any onward connections. Better yet, stay overnight in your connecting city.

Who Flies Where?

Two airlines serve Paro, and they don’t compete on every route:

The Land Alternative: India's Border Gateways

Not a fan of tiny mountain airports? Enter Bhutan by road from India through three official points:
  • Phuentsholing (most popular): 4.5-hour drive to Thimphu. Nearest airport: Bagdogra (IXB), India
  • Gelephu: Southern entry, connects to central Bhutan
  • Samdrup Jongkhar: Eastern exit point, 2.5 hours from Guwahati Airport
Why choose land? More flexible timing, cheaper, and you see the landscape transform from Indian plains to Himalayan foothills.

Flying Within Bhutan

Once you’re in, domestic flights can save days of driving:
  • Paro ↔ Bumthang: 35 minutes vs. 10-hour drive
  • Paro ↔ Gelephu: 40 minutes
  • Paro ↔ Trashigang: 45 minutes
Domestic flights operate 2-7 times weekly, depending on season and demand. Your tour operator can add these to your itinerary.
