Itinerary

Your journey begins the moment you descend into Paro Valley, where peaks soar beyond 7,000 meters. After clearing customs, your private guide and driver welcome you with a traditional khadar scarf. Rather than rushing, we ease you into Bhutan’s altitude with a spectacular mountain drive eastward.
Wind through pine and cedar forests to Dochula Pass (3,100m/10,170ft), where 108 gleaming chortens commemorate Bhutan’s 2003 victory and honor fallen soldiers. On clear days, the entire eastern Himalayan range—from Masangang to Gangkar Puensem—unfolds before you. For those feeling energetic, we offer an optional 2-hour circular hike to Lungchutse Lhakhang (3,600m), ascending through moss-laden forests where vibrant rhododendrons bloom in spring.

Descending into warmer climes, we stop at Chimi Lhakhang, the 1499 temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley—the beloved “Divine Madman” whose unconventional teachings live on. Built atop a hillock, this sacred fertility shrine draws pilgrims from across Bhutan. After receiving blessings, continue to your Punakha hotel for a restful evening at 1,200m elevation.

After breakfast, visit Punakha Dzong, formally known as Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (“Palace of Great Happiness”). Constructed in 1637 at the sacred confluence of the Mo (Female) and Pho (Male) rivers, this winter capital of Bhutan’s monastic body showcases exquisite masonry, gold-dusted temples, and towering whitewashed walls—widely considered the kingdom’s most stunning fortress.
Next, embark on a gentle 30-minute hike through terraced rice fields to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. This four-story temple, commissioned by the Queen Mother in 2004, features intricate Bhutanese murals and offers panoramic views of the fertile valley carved by glacial rivers. After lunch, visit Wolakha Nunnery (Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup), where you’ll observe the contemplative lives of Buddhist nuns and perhaps hear their melodic chanting.

Adventurous travelers can opt for white-water rafting on the Punakha River (grade I-II) through scenic gorges. Later, retrace your route across Dochula Pass to Paro Valley (2,200m), settling into your hotel for a two-night stay.

Today’s quest: the legendary Taktsang Monastery (3,120m/10,240ft). Begin early, following the steep forested trail where prayer flags flutter across chasms. After 1-1.5 hours, reach the viewpoint cafeteria for your first awe-inspiring glimpse of the monastery clinging to its cliff. Continue upward, crossing a waterfall and ascending stone steps to enter this 17th-century complex built around the cave where Guru Padmasambhava meditated in 747 AD, subduing demons while riding a tigress.

Spend contemplative time within the temples, where butter lamps illuminate ancient statues and the air hums with devotion. After descending, rejuvenate with a traditional Bhutanese lunch before visiting Kyichu Lhakhang, founded in 659 AD by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo as one of 108 temples to pin down a demoness. Its orange tree that bears fruit year-round and 7th-century Jowo Shakyamuni statue make it profoundly sacred.
Enjoy leisure time exploring Paro town’s artisan shops before we transport you to a local farmhouse. Here, immerse yourself in a therapeutic hot stone bath (dotsho), where heated river stones release minerals into artemisia-infused water—soothing muscles after your hike. Conclude with an authentic farm-to-table dinner.

After breakfast, your guide assists with check-in for your departure flight. As you ascend from Paro, watch the Himalayas recede, carrying with you blessings, photographs, and the ineffable peace of Bhutan. Tashi Delek—may all auspiciousness follow you until we meet again.
